Delta SkyMiles, Delta Air Lines’ loyalty program, opens doors to a vast network of destinations worldwide. But with its infamous dynamic pricing and no published Delta award chart, figuring out how many miles you actually need and if you’re getting a good deal can feel like a guessing game.

We built AwardFares to solve exactly this problem. With over 150,000 users who have saved an average of $2,000 on premium cabin redemptions, we’ve helped travelers cut through Delta’s pricing fog and find real value for their SkyMiles.

This guide is your ultimate resource for 2026. We’ll share the (unofficial) Delta SkyMiles Award Chart based on real pricing data, show you how to find the best Delta award availability, and reveal the sweet spots where SkyMiles actually shine. Having recently flown Delta One Suites from Buenos Aires to New York and visited the stunning new Delta One Lounge at JFK, I can tell you: getting these redemptions right is really worth the effort.

Key Takeaways for 2026

  • No Official Award Chart: Delta eliminated its award chart in 2015. Prices now fluctuate constantly based on demand, cash fares, and timing — a flight can be 17,000 miles one day and 80,000 the next.
  • Unofficial Chart is Your Benchmark: Our award chart (benchmark tables based on real pricing data) shows the minimum and average SkyMiles for popular routes. If you’re paying significantly more than our averages, wait for a better deal.
  • SkyMiles Are Worth ~1.1–1.2 Cents Each: On average, you’ll get about 1.1 to 1.2 cents per mile. Partner business class redemptions and flash sales can push this to 2+ cents — that’s where the real value hides.
  • AwardFares Shows What Delta Hides: Delta.com shows one day at a time. AwardFares’ Timeline View shows a full month, lets you sort by cheapest, and reveals partner availability that’s buried on Delta’s site.
  • TakeOff15 = Instant 15% Off: Delta Amex cardholders (Gold, Platinum, Reserve) automatically save 15% on award flights. A 35,000-mile ticket becomes 29,750 miles.
  • Book Partners 60+ Days Out: Partner awards on Air France, KLM, and Virgin Atlantic spike dramatically inside 60 days. Plan ahead for the best prices.
  • Miles Never Expire: Unlike most airlines, Delta SkyMiles never expire. Take your time and wait for the right redemption.
  • New for 2026: Hawaiian Airlines partnership has ended June 30, 2025. Choice Benefits changed February 1, 2026. MQD thresholds unchanged for 2027.

In This Guide

Do Delta SkyMiles Expire?

No, Delta SkyMiles never expire. This is one of the most valuable features of the program and a major advantage over competitors. Unlike American Airlines AAdvantage miles (which expire after 24 months of inactivity) or United MileagePlus miles (18 months), your SkyMiles balance stays intact indefinitely. Here’s the source.

This means you can:

  • Accumulate miles slowly over years without pressure
  • Save up for a big redemption like Delta One to Europe
  • Let miles sit while you wait for a flash sale or sweet spot

Watch Out for Gift Cards

One Exception: While your miles don’t expire, any Delta SkyMiles Gift Cards you receive do have expiration dates. Check the terms on any gift cards before they go to waste.

How Much Are Delta SkyMiles Worth?

On average, Delta SkyMiles are worth approximately 1.1 to 1.2 cents per mile when redeemed for flights. However, because Delta uses dynamic pricing, the actual value you get can swing wildly depending on the route, cabin, and timing.

SkyMiles Value by Redemption Type

Redemption Type Typical Value (cents per mile) Verdict
Domestic Economy 1.0 – 1.3¢ Average
Domestic First Class 0.9 – 1.2¢ Below Average
International Economy 1.0 – 1.2¢ Average
International Business (Delta) 1.0 – 1.4¢ Average
Partner Business Class 1.5 – 2.5¢ Best Value
Flash Sales / SkyMiles Deals 1.5 – 3.0¢+ Excellent
Delta Vacations 0.8 – 1.0¢ Below Average
Gift Cards / Merchandise 0.5 – 0.8¢ Poor

How to Calculate Your Redemption Value

Use this formula to determine if a redemption is worth it:

Value per mile = (Cash price − Award taxes/fees) ÷ Miles required

For example: A flight costs $450 cash or 35,000 miles + $25 in taxes.

  • Value = ($450 − $25) ÷ 35,000 = 1.21 cents per mile ✓ (Good deal)

Where to Find the Best Value

Pro Tip: The best SkyMiles values come from partner airline redemptions in premium cabins, especially on routes like Europe to Asia or intra-Asia flights on Korean Air. I’ve personally seen redemptions exceed 2.5 cents per mile on these routes using AwardFares to search partner availability.

Delta SkyMiles Value Calculator

Use this calculator to determine if a specific redemption offers good value. Enter the cash price and mileage cost of a flight you’re considering to see your value per mile.

Compare your result to the typical SkyMiles values: 1.0–1.3¢ = Good, 1.1–1.2¢ = Average, Below 1.0¢ = Poor.

Maximize Every Redemption

How to use this tool: When you find a flight on Delta.com or AwardFares, note the cash price and miles required. Enter them here to instantly see if you’re getting good value. Remember: Partner business class often yields 1.5–2.5¢+, while domestic economy averages 1.0–1.3¢.

TakeOff15: An Instant 15% Value Boost

If you hold a Delta SkyMiles American Express card (Gold, Platinum, or Reserve), you automatically get 15% off award flights on Delta-operated routes. This effectively increases your miles’ value by 15% on every redemption.

A flight priced at 35,000 miles becomes 29,750 miles with TakeOff15, that’s 5,250 miles saved on a single booking.

The Myth of the Delta Award Chart: Understanding Dynamic Pricing

If you’re searching for a Delta award chart, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common searches by program members. The hard truth is: Delta does not publish an award chart, and hasn’t since 2015.

Instead, Delta uses a dynamic award pricing model. This means the number of miles required for a flight isn’t fixed. It fluctuates based on many factors:

  • Cash Price of the Ticket: Higher cash fares usually mean higher mileage costs.
  • Demand: Popular routes during peak season (like New York to Rome in July) will cost far more miles than off-season travel.
  • Time of Booking: Prices can change daily, or even hourly.
  • Cabin Class: Delta One will cost significantly more than Main Cabin.

This system gives Delta maximum flexibility to control revenue but creates tremendous uncertainty for members. A flight from Los Angeles to Honolulu could be 17,000 miles one day and 80,000 the next. Without a baseline, how do you know if you’re getting a good deal?

That’s where an unofficial chart becomes essential.

The Unofficial Delta SkyMiles Award Chart (2026)

Since Delta won’t tell you what a “good” price looks like, we’ve compiled this unofficial Delta SkyMiles redemption chart using data tracked by AwardWallet and validated through thousands of searches on AwardFares.

These tables show what you can realistically expect to pay: both the lowest prices (which require flexibility and luck) and the averages (what you’ll typically see). If you’re being asked for significantly more than the average, either wait for a better day or set up an AwardFares Alert to catch a price drop.

Below are one-way prices for Delta-operated flights departing from the contiguous U.S.

Use This Data as a Guide, Not a Guarantee

Disclaimer: These are not guaranteed prices. They are benchmarks based on historical data. The actual Delta award availability and pricing you find will vary. Use these tables to gauge whether the price you see is a bargain, average, or overpriced.

Minimum SkyMiles Prices (The Best Deals)

This chart shows the lowest one-way award prices we’ve tracked for flights departing from the contiguous U.S. Finding these prices requires date flexibility and sometimes luck, but they prove that great SkyMiles deals do exist. We update our data based on what we see from AwardFares searches.

Average SkyMiles Prices (What You’ll Typically See)

This is the reality check. These are the prices you’ll encounter on a typical search. If Delta is quoting you significantly above these averages, you’re either looking at peak travel dates or the algorithm is not in your favor, consider flexible dates or set an alert to wait for a drop.

Best Ways to Use Your Delta SkyMiles: Finding Sweet Spots

In our humble opinion, SkyMiles aren’t the most valuable currency in the points world. But that doesn’t mean you can’t find excellent redemptions, you just need to know where to look.

The best value typically comes from three places: domestic flash sales, partner airline bookings (especially in premium cabins), and off-peak international travel. Here’s where we’ve found the most consistent value for AwardFares users.

Maximize Your Miles

Got a Big Welcome Bonus? Check out our dedicated guide on What To Do With 100k Delta SkyMiles for an in-depth look at the best redemption strategies.

1. Domestic Short-Haul Flights (Best for TakeOff15 Cardholders)

This is where SkyMiles genuinely shine. In competitive markets like New York, Los Angeles, and Seattle, we regularly see flights priced at 3,800 – 6,000 SkyMiles one-way in economy.

With the TakeOff15 benefit (available to Delta Amex Gold, Platinum, and Reserve cardholders), a 5,000-mile flight drops to just 4,250 miles. That’s often cheaper than the cash price after you factor in taxes.

Routes to watch:

  • NYC ↔ Boston, Washington, Chicago
  • LAX ↔ San Francisco, Seattle, Las Vegas
  • ATL ↔ Miami, New Orleans, Nashville

Find the Cheapest Day

AwardFares Tip: Use the Timeline View to scan a full month. Domestic prices can swing 50%+ day to day. Finding the right date is everything.

2. Flash Sales to Mexico and the Caribbean

Delta runs unannounced flash sales throughout the year, and leisure destinations are the most common targets. We’ve tracked round-trip Main Cabin flights for:

  • Boston → Los Cabos: 16,000 miles (Basic) / 26,000 miles (Main)
  • New York → Cancun: 18,000 miles (Basic) / 28,000 miles (Main)
  • Atlanta → San Juan: 15,000 miles (Basic) / 24,000 miles (Main)

These deals appear without warning and often last only 24-48 hours. Delta posts some to their SkyMiles Award Deals page, but many go unadvertised.

Get Notified Automatically

Don’t Miss the Next Sale: Set up an AwardFares Alert for your target route. We’ll email you when prices drop below your threshold, often before Delta even announces the deal.

3. Partner Business Class: The Real Sweet Spot

This is where SkyMiles can actually deliver outsized value (1.5 to 2.5+ cents per mile) but only if you book strategically.

Delta’s own international business class (Delta One) is notoriously expensive in miles, often 300,000+ round-trip to Europe. But partner airlines price awards separately, and that’s where the deals hide.

Best partner sweet spots we’ve found:

Route Airline Cabin Miles (One-Way) Value
Europe ↔ Middle East Air France, KLM Business 42,500 Excellent
U.S. ↔ Europe Virgin Atlantic Upper Class 80,000 – 120,000 Good
Within Asia Korean Air Business 15,000 – 40,000 Excellent
Asia → Australia Korean Air, China Eastern Business 65,000 Very Good
Seoul ↔ Tokyo Korean Air Business 15,000 Excellent
South America (LATAM) LATAM Business 31,000 – 77,500 Good

The 60-Day Rule

Critical: Book 60+ Days Out. Partner award prices spike dramatically inside 60 days. What’s 80,000 miles in March might be 180,000 in the final weeks. Plan ahead.

4. Intra-European Flights on Partners

If you’re already in Europe, SkyMiles can be surprisingly useful for connecting flights. Partner awards on Air France, KLM, and others start at:

  • Economy: 10,000 miles one-way
  • Business: 25,000 miles one-way

Business class intra-Europe isn’t lie-flat, but you get lounge access, priority boarding, and better baggage allowances, worth it for long connections or positioning flights.

5. Hawaii from the West Coast

Hawaii pricing is hit-or-miss, but deals exist from West Coast gateways:

  • LAX/SEA/SFO → Honolulu: As low as 17,000 miles one-way (economy)
  • Typical pricing: 28,000 – 64,000 miles one-way

Delta One to Hawaii (available on select routes) starts around 90,000 miles, but averages much higher. For premium cabins to Hawaii, cash fares are often the better play.

6. Intra-Hawaiian Island Flights

A hidden gem: You can use SkyMiles for flights between Hawaiian islands on Hawaiian Airlines for 7,500 miles + ~$6 taxes each way. If the cash price is $200+, this is solid value, and a great way to burn a small stash of miles.

Update for 2026: The Hawaiian Airlines partnership has ended. For inter-island travel in Hawaii, you’ll need to use cash, other loyalty programs, or Southwest Rapid Rewards.

Quick Concepts

What is TakeOff15?: A 15% automatic discount on Delta-operated award flights for Delta Amex cardholders (Gold, Platinum, Reserve). Applied at checkout, no code needed.

What are SkyMiles Deals?: Unannounced flash sales on specific routes. Prices drop 30–50% below normal. Visible on Delta’s site, but easier to catch with AwardFares Alerts.

Finding Deals: The Delta Award Availability Calendar Problem

Many travelers search for a “Delta award availability calendar”: a way to see pricing across multiple dates at once. Delta’s website doesn’t offer this. You have to search one day at a time, which makes spotting deals nearly impossible.

That’s exactly why we built AwardFares Timeline View. It displays an entire month of SkyMiles prices in one screen, color-coded so the cheapest days jump out immediately. No more clicking through 30 individual searches.

Step-by-Step: How To Find Delta Award Availability with AwardFares

Knowing the unofficial award chart is step one. Actually finding those prices is step two, and that’s where most people get stuck.

Delta.com’s search is intentionally limited. You see one day at a time, partner availability is buried, and there’s no way to sort by price. Here’s how to search smarter using AwardFares.

1. Go to AwardFares

Start with a free account to explore: you can see the calendar, browse other users’ recent searches, and get a feel for pricing. Sign up here (takes 30 seconds, no credit card required).

For live searches with real-time availability, you’ll need Gold ($9.99/mo) or Diamond ($19.99/mo), both with a 24-hour free trial.

2. Select Frequent Flyer Program

In the Frequent Flyer Program picker, choose Delta SkyMiles.

Select Delta SkyMiles in AwardFares Frequent Flyer Program Picker.

3. Enter Your Route

In the From and To fields, enter your airports. You can also search entire regions or countries.

Enter a route like Atlanta to Amsterdam to find Delta award flights.

4. Explore Dates with the Timeline View

For maximum efficiency, use the Timeline View. It shows you a full month of Delta award availability at a glance, instantly revealing the cheapest days to fly.

5. Sort by Price to Find the Best Deals

In the list view, click the cabin headers (Eco, Prem, Biz) to sort all results by price. This is the fastest way to find the lowest-priced flight across all dates and airlines.

6. Filter for Your Preferences

Use filters to narrow your search. You can filter by number of stops, specific partner airlines (e.g., only Air France), or set a Max Price to see flights within your budget.

Filter Delta SkyMiles results by cabin and maximum price.

7. Book on Delta.com

Once you’ve found the perfect flight, click Book. AwardFares will take you directly to Delta’s website with your flight details pre-filled to complete the booking.

How to Earn More Delta SkyMiles

1. Flying Delta and Partners

You earn miles on Delta-marketed flights based on the fare paid (before taxes). The higher your Medallion status, the more you earn:

  • General Member: 5 miles per $1
  • Silver Medallion: 7 miles per $1
  • Gold Medallion: 8 miles per $1
  • Platinum Medallion: 9 miles per $1
  • Diamond Medallion: 11 miles per $1

2. Co-Branded Credit Cards

The easiest way to earn a large number of SkyMiles is through welcome bonuses on Delta’s American Express cards.

  • Delta SkyMiles Gold American Express Card
  • Delta SkyMiles Platinum American Express Card
  • Delta SkyMiles Reserve American Express Card
  • (And their Business versions)

3. Transfer from American Express Membership Rewards

Amex Membership Rewards points transfer to Delta SkyMiles at a 1:1 ratio. This is a great way to top off your account for an award. This flexibility is offered by cards like The Platinum Card from American Express and the American Express Gold Card.

4. Other Partners

You can also earn miles through hotel stays (with partners like Marriott and IHG), car rentals (Hertz), shopping portals, and dining programs.

Redeeming SkyMiles: Beyond Standard Flights

Delta offers several ways to use your miles, but not all provide good value.

  • Award Travel: This is the standard way to book flights with miles and generally offers the best value.
  • Miles + Cash: This option lets you pay for part of an award ticket with cash. It’s typically a poor value, as the cash portion often “buys” miles at a very high rate. Avoid this if possible.
  • Pay with Miles: An exclusive benefit for Delta Amex cardholders. This lets you reduce the cash price of a ticket at a fixed rate of 1 cent per mile (e.g., 5,000 miles = $50 off). It’s better than Miles + Cash but usually provides less value than a good Award Travel redemption. It’s a decent option if you need to book a specific flight and award prices are sky-high.
  • TakeOff15: A fantastic perk for Delta Amex cardholders (excluding the Blue card). It gives you a 15% discount when booking Delta-operated award flights. This automatically applies at checkout and can turn a good deal into a great one.
  • Upgrades: You can use miles to upgrade a cash ticket. The value varies wildly. It’s sometimes a good deal on long-haul international flights.
  • Delta Vacations, Car Rentals, and Stays: You can redeem miles for vacation packages, hotels, and cars, but the redemption value is often poor compared to booking flights.

Booking with Partners: The Complete List and Rules

You can use SkyMiles to fly on 20+ partner airlines, significantly expanding your options beyond Delta’s own network. This is often where the best SkyMiles value hides, especially for premium cabin redemptions.

Key Partner Booking Rules

  • Book 60+ Days in Advance: Partner award prices spike dramatically inside 60 days. A business class seat that’s 80,000 miles in March might be 180,000 miles in the final weeks. This is the single most important rule for partner bookings.
  • No Blackout Dates on Delta: Delta doesn’t impose blackout dates on its own flights. However, partner airlines may have their own restrictions.
  • Some Partners Require Calling: Most partners can be booked on Delta.com, but a few (Air Europa, Air Tahiti Nui, Garuda Indonesia, Kenya Airways) require calling Delta Reservations at 800-221-1212.
  • Taxes Vary by Origin: Flights originating in Europe or the UK often carry high carrier-imposed surcharges. Flights originating in the U.S., Middle East, or Asia typically have lower taxes.

Core Partner Airlines (Best Earning & Redemption Rates)

These are Delta’s closest partners with the deepest integration. You’ll find the most availability and best value here:

SkyTeam Alliance Partners

As a SkyTeam founding member, Delta gives you access to all alliance carriers:

Other Partner Airlines

  • AirBaltic
  • Cape Air
  • China Southern
  • El Al Israel Airlines
  • WestJet

Partners Requiring a Phone Call

These airlines have limited online integration. You’ll need to call Delta Reservations (800-221-1212) to book:

  • Air Europa
  • Air Tahiti Nui
  • Garuda Indonesia
  • Kenya Airways

Finding Hidden Partner Space

Pro Tip: If you’re having trouble finding partner availability on Delta.com, search on the partner’s own website first (like Virgin Atlantic or Air France). If you see award space there, Delta should be able to book it. Sometimes it takes a phone call to find what the website misses.

What’s New for Delta SkyMiles in 2026

Delta made several changes heading into 2026. Here’s what you need to know:

Hawaiian Airlines Partnership Ended (June 30, 2025)

This is the biggest change affecting award bookings. Hawaiian Airlines is no longer a Delta SkyMiles partner as of June 30, 2025. If you have an existing award ticket on Hawaiian Airlines:

  • Travel must be completed by April 1, 2026.
  • No changes after June 30, 2025 (even if within ticket validity).
  • Cancellations will refund miles minus applicable fees.

For travel in 2026 and beyond, you’ll need to use other partners or Delta-operated flights for Hawaii travel.

Choice Benefits Changes (February 1, 2026)

Delta updated Choice Benefits for Platinum and Diamond Medallion members. Some got better, one got worse:

Benefit 2025 Value 2026 Value Change
Gift Status (Platinum) 2 Silver gifts 4 Silver gifts ✅ Better
Gift Status (Diamond) 2 Gold gifts 4 Gold gifts ✅ Better
Bonus SkyMiles (Platinum) 30,000 miles 35,000 miles ✅ Better
Bonus SkyMiles (Diamond) 35,000 miles 40,000 miles ✅ Better
Delta Travel Voucher (Platinum) $300 $350 ✅ Better
Delta Travel Voucher (Diamond) $350 $550 ✅ Better
Amex Statement Credit (Platinum) $400 $250 ❌ Worse
Amex Statement Credit (Diamond) $700 $500 ❌ Worse
Regional Upgrade Certificates 4 RUCs 4 RUCs No change

Bottom line: If you previously defaulted to the Amex statement credit, it’s time to reconsider. The travel voucher or bonus miles may now offer better value, especially if you can redeem SkyMiles at 1.2+ cpp.

MQD Thresholds Unchanged for 2027

Good news for status seekers: Delta confirmed that Medallion Qualification Dollar (MQD) requirements are staying the same for qualifying for 2027 status. No moving goalposts this year.

Status MQD Requirement
Silver Medallion $5,000
Gold Medallion $10,000
Platinum Medallion $15,000
Diamond Medallion $28,000

SkyMiles Experiences Platform Refresh

Delta relaunched / re-imagined SkyMiles Experiences (rolling out starting Nov 18, 2024) and continued expanding it through 2025, offering more ways to use miles beyond flights. This includes exclusive events, dining experiences, and luxury goods. The value varies, some experiences offer decent redemption rates, but most are better suited for burning small balances rather than maximizing value.

ITA Airways Moving to Star Alliance

ITA Airways (the successor to Alitalia) is expected to integrate with Star Alliance in 2026. While it remains bookable with SkyMiles for now, this partnership may change. If you’re planning Italy travel using SkyMiles on ITA, don’t wait too long.

Delta SkyMiles Upgrade Chart: Using Miles for Upgrades

Beyond booking award flights, you can use SkyMiles to upgrade paid tickets to a higher cabin. This can be a smart play when award availability is limited or when cash fares are reasonably priced.

How Delta Upgrades with Miles Work

Delta offers mileage upgrades on Delta-marketed and operated flights. The cost varies based on:

  • Your origin and destination
  • The cabin you’re upgrading to
  • How close to departure you’re booking
  • Your Medallion status (if any)

Unlike a fixed upgrade chart, Delta’s upgrade pricing is dynamic, just like award tickets. You’ll see the upgrade price when you select your flight on Delta.com or in the Fly Delta app.

Typical Upgrade Costs (Estimates)

Based on what we’ve observed, here are rough ranges for one-way mileage upgrades:

Route Type Main → Comfort+ Main → First Main → Delta One
Domestic Short-Haul 5,000 – 15,000 10,000 – 25,000 N/A
Domestic Long-Haul 7,000 – 20,000 15,000 – 40,000 N/A
Transatlantic 10,000 – 25,000 N/A 50,000 – 200,000+
Transpacific 10,000 – 25,000 N/A 60,000 – 250,000+

Basic Economy Cannot Be Upgraded

Important: Mileage upgrades are only available on certain fare classes. Basic Economy tickets are never upgradeable with miles. For the best upgrade availability, book Main Cabin or higher.

Upgrades vs. Booking Award Tickets: Which Is Better?

Scenario Better Option
Cash fare is cheap, upgrade cost is low Upgrade — you’ll earn MQDs on the cash ticket
Award availability exists at reasonable price Award ticket — often costs fewer miles total
Last-minute travel, no award space Upgrade — may be your only premium option
You need to earn toward Medallion status Upgrade — cash tickets earn MQDs, awards earn less

Partner Airline Upgrades

You can also use SkyMiles to upgrade certain flights on:

  • Aeromexico
  • Air France
  • KLM
  • Virgin Atlantic

These require booking in eligible fare classes and are subject to availability. Check Delta’s partner upgrade page or call Delta reservations for specific routes.

Global and Regional Upgrade Certificates

Platinum and Diamond Medallion members can choose upgrade certificates as a Choice Benefit:

  • Regional Upgrade Certificates (RUCs): Valid on domestic and short-haul international flights
  • Global Upgrade Certificates (GUCs): Valid on long-haul international flights to Delta One

These certificates are separate from mileage upgrades and can be more valuable for premium cabin upgrades on expensive routes.

How AwardFares Is Your Secret Weapon for SkyMiles

The best SkyMiles value is often on partners like Air France, KLM, and Virgin Atlantic. Delta buries this availability. AwardFares surfaces it with airline filters that show exactly what’s bookable, and at what price.

When Does Delta Release Award Seats?

Delta releases award inventory 331 days (approximately 11 months) in advance. But “released” doesn’t always mean “good price.”

The Reality of Award Release

With dynamic pricing, the first seats released are often priced at the highest mileage rates. Prices may drop as departure approaches, or they might not. There’s no predictable pattern, which is why setting alerts matters. Read more about award release dates on our guide.

When to Find the Best Prices

Based on what we’ve observed through AwardFares:

  • Sweet spot window: 2-4 months before departure often shows reasonable pricing for popular routes
  • Last-minute deals: Occasionally appear 1-2 weeks out, but risky to count on
  • Flash sales: Can happen anytime, often without warning
  • Partner awards: Best availability tends to be 60+ days out, with prices spiking inside that window

The Best Strategy

Don’t try to time the market. Instead:

  1. Know what a good price looks like (use our unofficial award chart)
  2. Set an AwardFares Alert at your target price
  3. Book when the alert fires, or when you find something at or below average

Waiting for the “perfect” price often means missing a good one.

Delta SkyMiles Booking Rules & Policies

Understanding the rules helps you book with confidence, and avoid surprises.

24-Hour Risk-Free Cancellation

Per DOT rules, you can cancel any award ticket for a full mileage refund within 24 hours of booking, as long as the flight was booked at least 7 days before departure. This effectively acts as a free award hold, book now, decide later.

Cancellation & Change Fees

Delta’s cancellation policy depends on where your travel originates:

Origin Main Cabin & Above Basic Economy
U.S. or Canada No redeposit fee Cancellation charge in miles
Outside U.S./Canada Fees may apply Fees may apply

For Main Cabin and above originating in the U.S. or Canada, you can cancel and get your miles back with no fee. Basic Economy award tickets are less flexible, cancellations result in a mileage deduction.

Taxes and Carrier-Imposed Fees

Award tickets still require paying taxes and fees in cash. What you’ll pay depends on the route and airline:

  • Delta-operated flights: Generally low fees, often $5.60 for domestic U.S.
  • Partner flights from the U.S.: Usually reasonable ($20-100)
  • Flights originating in the UK/Europe: Can be significant ($200-500+) due to carrier surcharges

When searching on AwardFares, you’ll see the miles required. Always check the final taxes on Delta.com before booking partner awards originating in high-surcharge regions.

Award Ticket Changes

For travel originating in the U.S. and Canada:

  • Main Cabin and above: No change fee. Pay the difference if the new flight costs more miles, or get the difference back if it costs less.
  • Basic Economy: Changes not permitted. Cancel and rebook (cancellation charges apply).

TakeOff15 and Cancellations

If you booked with the TakeOff15 discount and cancel, you get back the miles you actually paid (the discounted amount), not the full pre-discount price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your Questions Answered

How many SkyMiles for a free flight?

There’s no fixed number because Delta uses dynamic pricing. However, based on our data:

  • Domestic economy: As low as 5,000 – 10,000 miles one-way

  • Hawaii: Starting around 17,000 miles from the West Coast

  • Europe (economy): 37,000+ miles one-way

  • Europe (Delta One): 170,000+ miles one-way

Use the Unofficial Delta Award Chart above to see minimum and average prices by region, or search real-time availability on AwardFares.

Do Delta SkyMiles expire?

No, Delta SkyMiles never expire. Your miles remain in your account indefinitely, regardless of account activity. This is one of the best features of the SkyMiles program.

How much are Delta SkyMiles worth?

Delta SkyMiles are worth approximately 1.1 to 1.2 cents per mile on average. However, you can get significantly more value (1.5 – 2.5+ cents) on partner airline business class redemptions and during flash sales. See our SkyMiles value breakdown for details.

What is the difference between Miles + Cash and Pay with Miles?

Miles + Cash is an option on award tickets where you use fewer miles and pay a set cash amount. It typically offers poor value. Pay with Miles is an exclusive benefit for Delta Amex cardholders that lets you reduce the cash price of a ticket at a fixed value of 1 cent per mile, better than Miles + Cash, but usually worse than a good award redemption.

Can I use Delta miles to book a flight for someone else?

Yes. You can book an award ticket for anyone using your SkyMiles. They do not need to be traveling with you, and there’s no limit on who you can book for.

Can I transfer Delta SkyMiles to another airline?

No. You cannot transfer SkyMiles to another airline’s loyalty program. However, you can use your SkyMiles to book flights on 20+ partner airlines like Air France, KLM, Virgin Atlantic, and Korean Air through Delta.com.

What is "award travel" on Delta?

Award Travel is simply Delta’s term for a flight ticket booked using SkyMiles instead of cash. Award tickets still incur taxes and carrier-imposed fees, which must be paid in cash.

Does Delta have an award chart?

No. Delta eliminated its published award chart in 2015 and now uses fully dynamic pricing. Award costs change based on demand, cash prices, and other factors. Use our Unofficial Delta SkyMiles Award Chart as a benchmark for what constitutes a good deal.

When does Delta release award seats?

Delta generally releases award seats 331 days in advance. However, the best “saver” prices often don’t appear until closer to departure or during unannounced flash sales. Set up AwardFares Alerts to get notified when prices drop.

How many Delta miles for a free flight to Europe?

Economy flights to Europe typically start around 37,000 miles one-way during off-peak periods or sales, with averages closer to 65,000 – 110,000 miles. Delta One (business class) starts around 170,000 miles but averages 350,000+ miles at peak times. Partner airlines like Air France or Virgin Atlantic often offer better value, we’ve seen business class availability for 80,000 – 120,000 miles on these carriers when booked 60+ days out.

How many Delta miles for a flight to Hawaii?

From the West Coast, expect to pay 17,000+ miles at the low end for economy, with averages around 28,000 – 64,000 miles. From the East Coast or Midwest, prices are typically higher. Delta One to Hawaii (where available) starts around 90,000 miles.

Get The Most Of Your SkyMiles in 2026

Delta SkyMiles aren’t the most valuable points currency, but they’re far from worthless. The key is knowing where the value hides:

  • Domestic short-hauls with TakeOff15 for under 5,000 miles
  • Partner business class to Europe, Asia, and beyond at 1.5-2.5 cpp
  • Flash sales that drop prices 30-50% without warning
  • Booking 60+ days out to avoid partner price spikes

The hard part isn’t knowing this, it’s finding the availability. That’s why we built AwardFares, and why 150,000+ travelers use it to search smarter.
